Mbit to KiB Formula and Manual Conversion Steps

Megabit and Kibibyte are units of digital information used to measure storage capacity and data transfer rate. Megabit is a decimal standard unit where as Kibibyte is binary. One Megabit is equal to 1000^2 bits. One Kibibyte is equal to 1024 bytes. There are 0.008192 Megabits in one Kibibyte. - view the difference between both units

The formula of converting the Megabit to Kibibyte is represented as follows :

KiB = Mbit x 10002 / (8x1024)

Note : Here we are converting the units between different standards. The source unit Megabit is Decimal where as the target unit Kibibyte is Binary. In such scenario, first we need to convert the source unit to the basic unit - Bit - multiply with 1000^2, and then convert to target unit by dividing with 8x1024 .

Now let us apply the above formula and see how to manually convert Megabit (Mbit) to Kibibyte (KiB). We can further simplify the formula to ease the calculation.

FORMULA

Kibibyte = Megabit x 10002 / (8x1024)

STEP 1

Kibibyte = Megabit x (1000x1000) / (8x1024)

STEP 2

Kibibyte = Megabit x 1000000 / 8192

STEP 3

Kibibyte = Megabit x 122.0703125

Example : If we apply the above Formula and steps, conversion from 10 Mbit to KiB, will be processed as below.

  1. = 10 x 10002 / (8x1024)
  2. = 10 x (1000x1000) / (8x1024)
  3. = 10 x 1000000 / 8192
  4. = 10 x 122.0703125
  5. = 1220.703125
  6. i.e. 10 Mbit is equal to 1,220.703125 KiB.

(Result rounded off to 40 decimal positions.)

You can use above formula and steps to convert Megabit to Kibibyte using any of the programming language such as Java, Python or Powershell.

Definition : Megabit

A Megabit (Mb or Mbit) is a decimal unit of digital information that is equal to 1,000,000 bits and it is commonly used to express data transfer speeds, such as the speed of an internet connection and to measure the size of a file. In the context of data storage and memory, the binary-based unit of mebibit (Mibit) is used instead.

Definition : Kibibyte

A Kibibyte (KiB) is a binary unit of digital information that is equal to 1024 bytes (or 8,192 bits) and is defined by the International Electro technical Commission(IEC). The prefix "kibi" is derived from the binary number system and it is used to distinguish it from the decimal-based "kilobyte" (KB). It is widely used in the field of computing as it more accurately represents the amount of data storage and data transfer in computer systems.
