B to kB Formula and Manual Conversion Steps

Byte and Kilobyte are units of digital information used to measure storage capacity and data transfer rate. Byte is one of the very basic digital unit where as Kilobyte is a decimal unit. One Byte is equal to 8 bits. One Kilobyte is equal to 1000 bytes. There are 1,000 Bytes in one Kilobyte.

The formula of converting the Byte to Kilobyte is represented as follows :

kB = Byte / 1000

Now let us apply the above formula and see how to manually convert Byte (B) to Kilobyte (kB). We can further simplify the formula to ease the calculation.

FORMULA

Kilobyte = Byte / 1000

STEP 1

Kilobyte = Byte x (1 / 1000)

STEP 2

Kilobyte = Byte x 0.001

If we apply the above Formula and steps, conversion from 1024 Byte to kB, will be processed as below.

  1. = 1024 / 1000
  2. = 1024 x (1 / 1000)
  3. = 1024 x 0.001
  4. = 1.024
  5. i.e. 1,024 Byte is equal to 1.024 kB.

(Result rounded off to 40 decimal positions.)

Definition : Kilobyte

A Kilobyte (kB) is a decimal unit of digital information that is equal to 1000 bytes (or 8,000 bits) and commonly used to express the size of a file or the amount of memory used by a program. It is also used to express data transfer speeds and in the context of data storage and memory, the binary-based unit of kibibyte (KiB) is used instead.
