MB to KiB - Conversion Formula and Steps

Megabyte and Kibibyte are units of digital information used to measure storage capacity and data transfer rate. Megabyte is a decimal standard unit where as Kibibyte is binary. One Megabyte is equal to 1000^2 bytes. One Kibibyte is equal to 1024 bytes. There are 0.001024 Megabytes in one Kibibyte. - view the difference between both units

Kibibyte (KiB)
Equal to 1024 bytes
(Binary Unit)

The formula of converting the Megabyte to Kibibyte is represented as follows :

KiB = MB x 10002 / 1024

Note : Here we are converting the units between different standards. The source unit Megabyte is Decimal where as the target unit Kibibyte is Binary. In such scenario, first we need to convert the source unit to the basic unit - Byte - multiply with 1000^2, and then convert to target unit by dividing with 1024 .

Now let us apply the above formula and, write down the steps to convert from Megabyte (MB) to Kibibyte (KiB). This way, we can try to simplify and reduce to an easy to apply formula.

FORMULA

Kibibyte = Megabyte x 10002 / 1024

STEP 1

Kibibyte = Megabyte x (1000x1000) / 1024

STEP 2

Kibibyte = Megabyte x 1000000 / 1024

STEP 3

Kibibyte = Megabyte x 976.5625

Example : If we apply the above Formula and steps, conversion from 10 MB to KiB, will be processed as below.

  1. = 10 x 10002 / 1024
  2. = 10 x (1000x1000) / 1024
  3. = 10 x 1000000 / 1024
  4. = 10 x 976.5625
  5. = 9765.625
  6. i.e. 10 MB is equal to 9,765.625 KiB.

(Result rounded off to 40 decimal positions.)

You can use above formula and steps to convert Megabyte to Kibibyte using any of the programming language such as Java, Python or Powershell.

Definition : Megabyte

A Megabyte (MB) is a unit of digital information that is equal to 1,000,000 bytes (or 8,000,000 bits) and commonly used to express the size of a file or the amount of memory used by a program. It is also used to express data transfer speeds and in the context of data storage and memory, the binary-based unit of mebibyte (MiB) is used instead.

Definition : Kibibyte

A Kibibyte (KiB) is a unit of digital information that is equal to 1024 bytes (or 8,192 bits) and is defined by the International Electro technical Commission(IEC). The prefix "kibi" is derived from the binary number system and it is used to distinguish it from the decimal-based "kilobyte" (KB). It is widely used in the field of computing as it more accurately represents the amount of data storage and data transfer in computer systems.
